Dogtoberfest in Uptown Dallas

Not sure if we'll go since our dogs (well, Steve) lack social skills and graces. Plus, Todd gets all anxious scared that the dogs will be out of control or that I won't control them. This sounds fun though. And I Fratelli Pizza - yummm!!!

Not So Sweet Dreams

That's right . . . another Steve post. (I know, I know) Until we have kids, this is what you get. (Hell, this is what I get!) Thank goodness he's cute. This is yet another Steve post because - honestly - Mindy, Mackey & Pippin just don't have the personality that my baby dog has.

Here is Stevie while sleeping next to me on the couch yesterday:

I just wonder what he's dreaming. I typically awake him from his doggie dreams, but I didn't this time to sacrifice my dog in the name of blogging.

PS - Can you see how his hair is finally growing back??

It's THAT Time Again!

Today the gates opened to the
STATE FAIR OF TEXAS!!!
I haven't been to the fair in at least a few years, and I'm looking forward to going this year. We usually give our free teacher tickets away, but this year Todd and I are headed to Fair Park. This will be our first time going to the fair together. :) We'll be going with our friends and their 9 month old twin girls, so it should be a good time. My husband doesn't like crowds, thus the plan to go during the week. I just hope we have time to do some of my favorite things like:

Visit my boyfriend. His name is Tex. And he's Big.

Maybe look at some sparkly, new cars that we don't need/can't afford.

Hopefully see the Birds of the World show that I always thoroughly enjoy.

Possibly find out what/who's cooking in the IKEA Celebrity Kitchen. I wonder if it's in the Food & Fiber building? They used to give away miniature loaves of Mrs. Baird's bread. But I digress . . .

Maybe play a few games on the Midway. (Hopefully Todd won't win me any teddy bears because I hate carrying that ugly shit around!)

Of course, I'm most excited about:

THE FOOD!!! I must (MUST) have my Fletcher's Corn Dog with lots of mustard and a messy funnel cake dusted with powdered sugar. If I can't have those, then why go to the Fair??? I kid you not. I won't go if I can't eat both. Seriously. Don't mess with my Fair Food.

I'll close with a funny story. My Dad used to take us girls to the fair most every year. We always LOVED going, but we would usually tired pretty quickly. As we got older, my sisters and I finally figured out why. Dad would take us and walk VERY fast, so we'd wear out and cry and beg to go home. (To which my smart father always obliged.) Haha!

More About Me

I took this meme from Joyce's Blog because I've gotten bad about blogging during the crazy weeks of school.

i am: a very caring person.
i think: with my heart more than my head.
i know: a little bit about a lot of different things.
i want: children.
i have: a freakish memory when it comes to certain things (people, phone numbers, dates, etc).
i wish: I could get pregnant & stay that way.
i hate: people who are cruel to those less fortunate (handicapped, animals, children, elderly, etc.).
i miss: sleeping in every day.
i fear: not ever having my own children, anything higher than a chair.
i feel: deeply.
i hear: Steve snoring & a boring Cowboys game.
i smell: when my nose isn't stuffed.
i crave: salty things like chips.
i search: for people I might know everywhere I go. (don't laugh Martha!)
i wonder: about random stuff & Todd's thinks I'm nuts sometimes.
i regret: that I stopped playing the saxophone in 8th grade.
i ache: when I think I could be a mom and I'm not.
i care: very deeply about my family & friends.
i always: sleep on my stomach or side.
i am not: overly concerned what people think of me & my social status (or lack thereof).
i believe: there is a reason to hope.
i dance: really well when I'm drunk.
i sing: to my animals.
i cry: often and everyone knows it except for my kids until the last day of school gets me.
i don’t always: share my true feelings like I should.
i fight: when I believe I am in the right and am being treated like crap.
i write: on my blogs more than I've ever journaled.
i never: mean to hurt others, even if I do sometimes.
i stole: Todd's heart. :)
i listen: to others.
i need: to pray more often.
i am happy about: getting a day off on October 13th.

What I Learned This Weekend

** Cue up the theme music from Deep Thoughts by Jack Handy **

Things I Learned This Weekend:

1. If you can't feel the fingertips on your left hand, it's best not to use that hand while working in the kitchen.

2. To revive the feelings of pain in numb fingertips, try to cut one off & burn the other. It works like a charm. If you're not really positive if they hurt, run them under some hot water to make sure.

3. Tired dogs = sleeping dogs = quiet house

4. It's best to cook rice a bit before baking it unless you like some crunchy texture.

5. 1.5 year old M&Ms still taste good if they are personalized with your names, wedding date & hidden in a baggie beneath a dark cabinet.

6. Sauvingon Blanc + M&Ms = yum

7. If you step in dog shit while cooking dinner barefooted in the kitchen, check with the dogs have your husband check his shoes.

8. Papers do NOT grade themselves, but you'll look busy and important carrying them in & out of school each day.

9. If your husband is yelling from the back of the house, he's either calling for you or talking to his mother on the phone.

10. When your mom says she'll meet you at the dog park & then mentions she needs to return the pillows she borrowed, expect to see her walking down the trail to the dog park with two huge, pink pillows underarm. :)

11. If you're cooking potato salad for your husband's friends' party, make sure he hasn't taken the mustard to work and left it there. If so, sub dry mustard & any other mustard-like product you can find in your house. Then pray you don't embarass yourself with the dish you bring.

12. Sleep is HIGHLY underrated.

13. A raise is a raise. Take it if you get it, no matter what it is.

14. When you get frustrated with your husband, pets, or anyone else in your life, remember that somebody - somewhere - is wishing they had a husband, pet or someone else to be frustrated with in the first place.

Have a great week!!!

Gone to the Dogs

Todd and I took our beasts to the Plano Dog Park today. We always have to be most watchful with Steve because he is so gregarious, selfish, and nosy. Today was the same - as always.

We got all five of us into the gated area of the park and let the dogs run. Unfortunately there were a couple of dogs getting into it with some other dogs, and Steve (did you see gregarious/selfish/nosy?) decided to get in on the action. The mean dogs, who were smaller than Steve, ran him under a table and attacked. Of course, I couldn't get to him, and Steve was yelping like a baby. One of the dogs bit Steve in the ear, and luckily the dogs were pulled off by their owners then quickly left the park.

Steve's ear was bleeding pretty badly, so I leashed him and tried to clean it up with some water. Another girl at the park checked it, and the ear was knicked on the edge and had a bite mark on it. I was kind of pissed because those dogs shouldn't have been in the park in the first place, but I also understand that Steve shouldn't have gotten involved. I kept Steve leashed for a long while until the traffic died down and all the dogs were nice. I didn't want the other poochies smelling fresh blood and consider my dog a piece of meat!

Tired Pippin says hi to Daddy.

Steve says hi to everyone, but doesn't want to get too close to me for fear of having to go home.

Pippin had a blast. Mackey kept running off and sat by the exit gate when he was ready to leave (thus no pics). Steve eventually was unleashed and trotted around a bit. My mom met us at the park for a while and enjoyed seeing all of the dogs run around and play just as much as we did. Boy, the dogs are TIRED now. Mission Accomplished!

They crashed in the car on the ride home. They are all sleeping soundly now. And Steve, our resident badass-chicken dog is no worse for the wear. Luckily.

Here's a great video of tired boy on the ride home. And, yes, I talk to my dog like he's a baby. Because obviously he is. :)

Steve & Discipline

When Steve was tiny

I mean this tiny:
(4.5 weeks vs. 35 pound Mackey)

Anyway . . . When he was tiny, Steve wasn't much of a problem. He was an itty-bitty boy and just needed love, food, water, and training. (and more love) Steve was taken from his dog mom much too early, but his litter was soon to be taken to the pound and we had to rescue him.

As the Baby Dog got bigger

Maybe like this:
(not even six months old with a flop-ear he couldn't control)

Anyway . . . as Steve started getting bigger, he was chewing EVERYTHING in sight - baseboards, pillows, window sills, Cole Haans, wallets, furniture, leather, credit cards, paper - you name it! We tried bitter apple, clickers, pennies in a coke can, newspaper swats to our hands, positive reinforcements through treats, a thousand firm "NOs", and anything else we could think of.

When he was about 8 months old, Stevie finally graduated from Obedience Training. He improved so much, and Daddy & Mommy were so proud!

But we still couldn't keep up with our growing boy. Steve had SO much energy & we couldn't provide him enough consistent activity. So . . .

Why not get a friend to play with??
We need three dogs, right?
(Steve 18 mos. with his girlfriend, Pippin.)
Then Steve kept growing. And growing. AND GROWING!

Let's say this big:
(age 2.5 maybe, about 100 lbs.)

We knew that we'd have to find something else that would work. Some kind of a discipline tool. You know, in the times where Steve was chasing Pippin and trying to chew the fur off her face. What would work that we hadn't tried before?

Enter:

Yep. That's right. Breath spray. Binaca, Sweet Breath, whatever. Steve HATES it!!! When I pull it out, you'd think I was preparing for battle by wielding a ten-foot saber. We've only sprayed it a couple of times and Steve runs off anytime he sees it. He's overly dramatic, so it's quite the presentation when he sees us pull it out. All I have to do is take off the lid and set the spray down. We don't even have to use it now. :)

Why this long, random post (full of CUTE pictures) about breath spray? Because Steve was just trying to remove Pipp's tail, chase Mackey, sit on me, and sniff the cat's butt. I got out the spray. He's presently outside pouting. Mom wins. For now!

Do you use Google Reader?

If you do, let me know so we can share items! (kekis26@gmail.com)

If you don't use Google Reader, you should!

#1 - Google Reader is a great way to keep up with all of your blog reading. There's no way I could click on every blog link I have now.

#2 - You can keep all of your blogs organized in whatever fashion you like. I have categories for cooking, personal, hobbies, shopping, etc.

# 3 - If you use GR, set it up with others you know so you can share blogs you like. I've learned about new blogs, funny stuff, recipes, and shopping deals through some of my peeps that are my GR friends.

#4 - Subscribe to new blogs using the Google search tool in Reader. Type in a subject and see what is suggested. You can always unsubscribe to blogs if you like.

#5 - Google Reader works for all blogs/feeds!

And no, I don't get paid for this PSA. I just like GR that much.

EDIT: Ike WAS on his way here

EDIT: Ike hit our Gulf Coast friends pretty hard, but all we got was some rain. No trace of precipitation now!

I thought I'd be smart and go fill up since gas prices are going up so quickly. I was pleased to pull into my neighborhood gas station to see prices only $3.42/gallon of unleaded!

Right about the time I'm ready to pump, a nice man in an orange safety vest walks by and puts this on my pump:

Orange safety vest man said they'd be completely out of gas in about an hour. Guess I'm not the only smart person in North Dallas! So, I bought this instead:

I didn't mind, though, because an elderly man pumping his gas on the other side of my pump said his daughter is in Houston (actually, Katy) and he can't get in touch with her. You could see the worry in his face. I'm hoping and praying that our family & friends on the Texas coast are safe as are any of yours.

Come hurricane, rain, or shine, the dogs had a great time in the car!

It's a Blog Singalong!

C'mon everyone! (Ahemmm . . . Kristin clears her throat.) Let's all sing a song. Our song is written to the tune of the popular "Three Blind Mice". And - hhhmmmmm - sing!

One blind chick
One blind chick
See how she saunters
See how she saunters
She's getting so old that she can not see
So with reading glasses she'll no longer be
One blind chick.
One blind chick.

Yes. I'm so freaking old and blind that I actually bought a cheapie pair of reading glasses tonight. I can see, but it's weird and now I have a headache. Could be the wine, but I'm thinking it's from the new specs. Vision and function over beauty and pride I suppose. HMPH.

Random Crap

I always have weird crap flying through my head, and since Todd isn't home, you get to hear it instead.

1. I wonder if I smell like dog a lot. Steve always tries to lick me to death, and anytime he hugs me I'm covered in dog hair. I shower and use deodorant, but I hope I don't still smell like a dog. Do I?

2. Speaking of dogs, Pippin & Steve have been wrestling a lot lately. For some reason, their favorite place to begin most matches is between the coffee table and couch. (You know, where all the vast open space is in the house??) Tonight, they started under the coffee table. I yelled at them to stop because I was drinking wine from my Waterford and it was wobbling under the "wrestling mat" called the table. I guess they don't understand what Waterford is because they didn't stop immediately. Interesting.

3. I need to go see a neurologist. I've lost feeling in some of the fingers on my left hand & I'm having aches/pains in my arms, hands, and fingers. My mom said I need an MRI. Oh goody. Nothing like lying perfectly still in a tube that's probably frying what's left of my bum uterus. That's a whole different ball of wax though.

4. I'm tired. If I drink enough wine, maybe I'll actually go to sleep.

5. I think our dog Mackey sees dead people. He stares into the air and stares at corners pretty much every day. I look every now & then to see if I can see what he's looking at, but I can't. Perfectly sweet dog but weird as hell.

6. The other day I was driving home and a leaf was blowing towards the front grill of my car. After it went out of my sight, I reached down to my ankle to get the leaf. Heeelllllloooooo - I was in the car & the leaf was outside of it. My husband thinks I'm losing my mind. Still. Again.

7. I fired my Wal Mart yesterday. I won't go back there again. They're rebranding and totally redoing the store. Shopping there is like walking in the land of the dead because everyone is walking around with a stunned look on their faces because nobody knows where the eff anything is anymore. (nice runon sentence huh?) Plus, the layout sucks. Luckily, there are two WMs and eight other grocery stores within three miles of our house. I should be fine, but that one store was really my favorite.

8. I hate running errands - especially returning stuff. I have a couple of outfits that I decided look like crap on me (after I got them home) & I need to return them. As in, I need to return them before the ninety days is up later this week. ugh.

That should be it for now. Need to finish my wine, grade a crapload of papers, clean the dishes, iron my stupid shirt for tomorrow (I NEVER iron), and finally get some sleep.

Great Cooking Trick

Cool way to peel a hard-boiled egg . . . without peeling it!

Instructions:

1. Cover the eggs with water and boil on low for about 12 minutes
2. Cool the eggs by placing them in cold water with 1 teaspoon of baking soda and ice. The baking soda raises the pH level and reduces adherence. If you choose not to use baking soda, be sure to move the eggs into cold water with plenty of ice immediately after boiling
3. Crack the top of the egg and remove a small piece
4. Crack the bottom (wide end) of the egg and remove a small piece
5. Hold the egg in your hand and blow vigorously into the narrow end of the egg, which will expel it out the wide end.

Doesn’t get much easier than that! Just be ready to catch it when it comes out!

My Bid for Office

Crazy as it seems, I'd appreciate your vote!

Kristin for President

If Today Wasn't Thursday

. . . then it had better be Friday! I am BEAT. This whole back-to-school thing is tough. Training a new group of kids is hard work - and I have to teach them while that's happening!

Overall, my class is very sweet. VERY talkative and VERY immature for their ages, but sweet so far. I hope they simmah down, grow up some, stay sweet, and not make me insane in the process.

So, dear blog, I'm not ignoring you. I'm just tired.
